Le Foyer – In Process

A conversation between Matthias Gabi, Franziska Schott, Marco Schibig

THIS EVENT IS UNFORTUNATELY CANCELLED

Wednesday, 28 October 2020, 07 pm

A discovery in the archive of the Kunsthalle Bern aroused Matthias Gabi’s (b. 1981, lives in Zurich) interest: about 2,500 printing plates with reproductions, so-called printing clichés, are stored here, for no apparent purpose, as a repository of images from past exhibitions and evidence of forgotten book printing processes. The plates were used to print image pages in exhibition catalogues, but became superfluous, particularly after the advent of offset technology in the 1970s, and were therefore disposed of in many places. Not so at the Kunsthalle Bern. Gabi plans to activate the silent potential of this unique collection in an artist’s publication and “re-stage” the old process with selected plates. Together with the book designers Franziska Schott and Marco Schibig, who themselves have produced many publications for the Kunsthalle Bern, Gabi discusses the issues that arise from this process of analysis, selection, compilation and production. The printing clichés from the Kunsthalle archive serve as illustrative material.
