MADEIN COMPANY (China): "Physique Of Consciousness"

Under the moniker MadeIn, Shanghai-based artist Xu Zhen employs a pool of young artists to conceive and execute vast quantities of work in a range of media. Since the group’s inception in 2009, MadeIn’s paintings, sculptures and installations have frequently been shown in both solo presentations and group exhibitions. Works appropriate visual and conceptual references in their formal aesthetic features. MadeIn is organized as a creative company to produce independent and commissioned artworks and exhibitions. Xu Zhen has chosen to engage with this conventional operational model to problematize cooperative cosplay relationships within the field of contemporary visual culture and to urgently examine the continual materialization of visual spectacles in society today.

OLIVIER MOSSET: Born in Bern (CH)

Olivier Mosset was born in Berne, Switzerland, in 1944. That fact is also the point of departure of new series of works by the seminal Swiss artist at Kunsthalle Bern. Mosset will delve into his earliest memories of the city of his childhood and bring them back in an oblique way. Resident in the United States since 1977, Mosset now lives and works in Tucson, Arizona.

MOSHEKWA LANGA - MARHUMBINI - IN AN OTHER TIME

Moshekwa Langa’s art is amongst the most difficult to pigeonhole. “People can’t reconcile my idiosyncratic views with their own desire to classify me”, he says, but his work, meandering along contradictory trajectories, often tempts the viewer to arrive at false conclusions. In many ways, Langa’s work mirrors the artist’s life and his activities as they oscillate between Johannesburg and Europe, between nostalgia for his rural South African home and his life as an expatriate in Europe.

The Idea of Africa (re-invented) #2: CHEIKH ANTA DIOP

In conjunction with Moshekwa Langa’s solo-show, Kunsthalle Bern presents the documentary exhibition The Idea of Africa (re-invented) # 2 focussing on Senegalese historian, anthropologist, physicist and politician Cheikh Anta Diop (29 December 1923 in Thieytou, Diourbel Region - 7 February 1986 in Dakar). Diop studied the human race's origins and pre-colonial African culture and is regarded as an important figure in the development of the Afrocentric viewpoint, in particular for his controversial theory that the Ancient Egyptians were Black Africans. Research for this exhibition has been conducted by Mohammed Ndiaye-Kingué and Vanessa Van Obberghen.

DORA GARCÍA: Real Artists don't have Teeth

Real artists don't have teeth is a performance monologue which premiered March 2010 in Moderna Museet, as a part of García's exhibition at Index in Stockholm. It had a second incarnation at the Kunsthalle Bern for her solo show in August 2010. Tinted by the artist's characteristic dark humour, the performance work examines the complexity in issues related to censorship, audience-artist relationships, mainstream and marginality. The ironical moral of the story is that the real artist should always remain marginal to be safe from mainstream wolves. The contradictions of such a position point to the concept of counterculture, defined by Basaglia as “the culture of the deviant.” So what’s the contract between the normal and the deviant, and what are the political and cultural implications of this agreement? That’s the core of Real artist’s don’t have teeth.

Anne-Mie van Kerckhoven – Europäisches Zentrum für Futuristische Kunst

Developing a complex multimedia work since the late 70s, Anne-Mie van Kerckhoven carries the spectator away in an abundance of images, words and alienating sound, connecting subject matters from the most different realms. Every exhibition functions as a ‘surviving mechanism’ introducing new works or recontextualizing older pieces. The logic is that of expansion rather than limitation. Hence ‘multiplicity’ is a quality; as a field of interpretations intended to compensate the entropic drift of meaning. The way Anne-Mie van Kerckhoven ‘installs’ some of her works in a flexible structure is an answer to her obsession for systems in which invisible forms of self-organisation are at work, such as the human brain, a computer virus, a living organism, an ant colony or an internet database.
